Before we get to these free samples of Gatorade, let’s take a look at some basic human physiology and why it’s so important to rehydrate with this specially-formulated beverage.
When you are physically active in hot, humid environments your body tends to sweat a lot. Sweating is a basic bodily function, designed to keep your core temperature within normal operating limits. More specifically, sweat is composed of fluid (water) and electrolytes. Electrolytes are molecules such as sodium and potassium that the cells of your body need to function.
When these fluids and electrolytes are not replaced, you can become ill. This is known as heat-releated illness. Rehydration with water alone is sometimes not enough, particularly if you’re very physically active for longer periods of time.
In 1965, the University of Florida hired Dr. Robert Cade, Dr. Dana Shires, Dr. H. James Free and Dr. Alejandro de Quesada to formulate a new sports beverage to combat the heat-related illnesses that were running rampant throughout the Florida Gators football team.
The development was a huge success, obviously. Since 1965, Gatorade has changed somewhat but is still the beverage that it was so many years ago. Gatorade.com has a really cool history page if you’re interested.
